Zweigelt

A cross of St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. Bright cherry fruit and soft tannins give a light, easy red. Its cold hardiness has made it important not only in Austria but also in Japan's Hokkaido.

History

Bred in 1922 by the Austrian Fritz Zweigelt, it is now Austria's most widely planted black grape. Introduced to Japan from the 1970s, it adapted to Hokkaido's cool climate and points to new possibilities for Japanese red wine.

Sommelier Note

Served slightly chilled the fruit lifts, and it sits well with the sweet-savoury seasoning of Japanese cooking. Few reds meet soy-and-sugar dishes such as yakitori tare or ginger pork quite so naturally.
