Pinot Blanc

A white member of the Pinot family. Its gentle fruit recalls Chardonnay but stays more restrained and softer on the palate. In Alsace it serves both as an everyday food wine and as a base for Crémant d'Alsace.

History

A mutation of Pinot Noir, long confused with Chardonnay; the two were only formally distinguished in the late 19th century. Known as Weissburgunder in Germany and Austria, it is widely planted across the cool regions around the Alps.

Sommelier Note

It has no dominant personality, and that is exactly its use. When the menu is undecided or the table holds several dishes, it is the safe first bottle. Alsace examples are gently priced and made for everyday drinking.
