Torrontés

Argentina's signature white. It offers sweetly perfumed rose and lychee aromatics yet drinks dry and fresh — the gap between nose and palate is its defining trait. The highest vineyards of Salta give the most aromatic examples.

History

DNA analysis shows it arose in South America from a crossing of Criolla Chica, brought from Spain, with Muscat of Alexandria — the source of its lychee perfume. Since the 1990s it has stood alongside Malbec as Argentina's calling card.

Sommelier Note

It smells sweet and drinks dry, and that contradiction is the fun of it. With spice-driven, coriander-heavy Asian cooking the match is remarkable. Anyone who loves Gewürztraminer will take to it.
