One of the Douro's traditional black grapes; the name means "red dog". Very low yielding and difficult to grow, it contributes high acidity and delicate aromatics, and is prized for the finesse it lends age-worthy Ports and Douro reds.
An ancient variety mentioned in 16th-century records, among the oldest of the Douro's traditional grapes. Low yields cut plantings drastically in the 20th century and it came close to disappearing, but quality-minded producers have recognised its worth and it is slowly returning, in old field blends and in new plantings alike.
You will almost never see it alone, yet it is what lends refinement to long-aged Ports and top Douro reds. Against the region's natural power it adds depth through fine acidity and perfume.
