History

An indigenous variety grown in Tokaj for centuries. Its susceptibility to noble rot made it valuable for Aszú. Quality fell during the era of state-run mass production, but since privatisation in the 1990s dry varietal wines have also emerged.

Sommelier Note

Much of the perfume in Tokaji Aszú comes from this grape. The dry versions now appearing pair quince and white peach with taut acidity, offering something quite different from Furmint.
